Fracture Management
Scheduled a training session, and wonder what you need to have on hand? Please keep in mind, this is simply "how I do it" and not necessarily the way you have to do it. You are certainly welcome to use and develop your own protocols.
 
  • cefazolin injectable - 10 mg/lb IV 30 minutes preoperative, immediately postoperative, then every 6 hours for 24 hours postoperatively or at least another injection at the end of the day.
  • pain control medication - butorphanol, morphine, buprenorphine, lidocaine patches, MLK drip (your choice)
  • orthopedic socks - www.generaleconopak.com, or sterile vetwrap
  • 4 sterile surgical towels for draping, plus a large drape to cover the entire patient (may use paper)
  • 7 1/2 gloves, sterile (in case I run out)
  • XL gowns, sterile (in case I run out)
  • surgery pack: towel clamps, needle drivers, forceps, sharp metzenbaums, forceps, 6-8 small hemostats, 2 Allis forceps, scalpel handle, #10 and #11 blades
  • All TTA equipment and implants (I will bring 1 set)
  • power equipment (I bring at least one set, www.scilvet.com)
  • Electrosurgery Unit, optional for coagulation of bleeders, (www.ellman.com)
  • ice packs for postop, bandaging material
  • Lidoderm(TM) patches, optional, for incisional pain control
  • Postoperative pain control, use an NSAID and Tramadol (2-4 mg/kg BID-TID), Cephalexin antibiotic of choice (10 mg/lb po BID-TID); anxious dogs may need alprazolam
  • Rehabilitation booklets for the owner, (www.TopDogHealth.com)
  • Video/still camera if you wish to film the procedure
